PHYSICAL EDUCATION

BAND AND CHOIR

Physical Education classes meet three times a week for 30 minutes each. Students participate in a variety of activities such as soccer, volleyball, football, basketball, hockey, jump rope, line dancing, softball, and track. Students are also required to participate in physical fitness testing two times per year. 5th-grade physical fitness scores are sent to Sacramento to be compared to other 5th grade students in California. Fitness Standards--which include the mile run, curl-ups (sit-ups), push-ups, and trunk lifts--are all compared. Currently, Wasco ranks lowest in the state in these areas, so we are trying to work hard on arm strength, abdominal strength, and cardiovascular endurance (running the mile).

Students need to come dressed appropriately for activity on PE days. Shoes need to have the laces tied and clothes should be comfortable and appropriate for the weather conditions.

Each week students also have a health class. This class teaches about muscles, bones, asthma, smoking, nutrition, heart facts and water safety, along with many other topics related to health.
Students may join the Wasco Union Elementary School District's Band as early as 4th grade and continue through 8th grade. Mrs. Medina is the Music Teachers at James A. Forrest Elementary.
